Again, NNPC fails to remit $1.48bn into Federation Account...

The Federation Accounts Allocation Committee on Friday raised the alarm that the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation has yet to remit $1.48bn into the Federation Account as directed by PriceWaterHouse Coopers in its forensic audit of the corporation.

PriceWaterHouse Coopers was last year hired to carry out the exercise following an allegation by the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Lamido Sanusi, that $20bn was not remitted to the Federation Account by the NNPC.

N9bn for GEn. Buhari’s ministers, lawmakers outrageous –Nigerians

A cross section of Nigerians have condemned the planned payment of about N9bn as perks to ministers and lawmakers who will assume office in the government of President-elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), as recently reported by Saturday PUNCH.

The newspaper on May 9, 2015, in an investigative report, said lawmakers to constitute the 8th National Assembly and ministers to be appointed by Buhari would receive N9bn as perks on assumption of office.

The perks include housing, furniture and motor vehicle allowances, among others.

A lot of Nigerians do not know that Nigeria is a secular state and they are also not aware that the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria does not require that Buhari take his oath of office by swearing with the Quran.  

The drafters of the constitution made it crystal clear that any Nigerian of any faith or no faith can hold any office. It would have been very easy for the constitution drafters to include it in our constitution that the president should be sworn in with the Quran. But they didn’t. In other words, placing a hand on a Quran while reciting the presidential oath is simply a tradition that is not backed by the constitution. Meaning, it is absolutely unnecessary.

Governors call me ‘Okpekpe marathon man’ —Gov Oshiomhole

Edo State governor, Adams Oshiomhole, has revealed that his counterparts have nicknamed him ‘Okpekpe marathon man’ because of his regular participation in the annual 10km Okpekpe Road Race.

The governor who spoke on Thursday during the visit of the Chairman, Main Organising Committee of the Okpekpe race, Dan Ngerem, and other members which included Chief Mike Itemuagbor visited him at the Government House. Oshiomhole admitted that he gets excited when he is called the ‘Okpekpe marathon man’ by other state governors because it shows the government’s investment in road infrastructure in Okpekpe has been a progressive move.

Sad: Three policemen killed, others injured as IG’s men, vandals clash

Three policemen attached to the Inspector General of Police Special Task Force on Anti-Pipeline Vandalism Unit were shot to death and many injured after vandals clashed with them at the Obadore area of Igando, Lagos State.

It was gathered that the armed vandals, numbering over 20, positioned themselves in strategic positions in the creeks to wade off “intruders” and ambushed the policemen.

It was heard that three policemen were killed and many others injured.

Ojukwu never imagined I’d go to war – Gen. Gowon Says

A former military head of state, Gen. Yakubu Gowon, says the leader of the defunct Biafra, the late Chukwuemeka Ojukwu, underestimated him by thinking that he (Gowon) would never go to war.

Gowon, who led Nigerian forces to defeat Ojukwu’s army during the Nigerian civil war from 1967-1970, said this at the Diamond Jubilee Lecture of the Foursquare Gospel Church in Nigeria in Lagos on Thursday.

The former head of state said he was known to be a ‘Born Again’ Christian and Ojukwu, who was the then premier of the Eastern Region, thought his region could secede from Nigeria without consequences because he thought Gowon would not want to go to war.

President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday explained why he went to court to challenge the results of the presidential elections, he lost in 2003, 2007 and 2011.

Buhari, who stated this when Delta State All Progressives Congress members visited him in Abuja, said that he took the decision because he believed Nigeria must be free.

So Dangote’s refinery to run on UOP Technology

UOP LLC, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Honeywell International Incorporated, on Wednesday said its process technology, catalysts and proprietary equipment would form the basis for Dangote’s refinery, the largest refinery in Africa that is targeted at reducing Nigeria’s dependence on imported fuels and petrochemicals.

Africa’s richest man and President, Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, had in March announced that his oil refinery would process 650,000 barrels per day of crude, up from the 450,000bpd initially planned.

Why We Killed Policemen during Lekki Robbery ─ Suspect Tells

Four suspected members of a robbery gang that unleashed terror on the Lekki area of Lagos on Thursday, March 12, have been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command.

The suspected robbers ─ Duke Odogbo, 38, said to be the gang leader; Lawrence Kingsley, 31; Ebi Tosan, 20; and 30-year-old Ekelemo Kuete ─ were arrested in Delta, Ogun, Ondo and Lagos states. And while speaking on Wednesday, Odogbo, from Warri, Delta State, said they killed the policemen because the gang was prepared to deal with every resistance.

He added that they came with seven AK-47 rifles and carted away over N15m in the operation.

The hunt for missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 has uncovered a previously uncharted shipwreck deep underwater, leading officials to say Wednesday that if the plane is in their search zone they will find it.

Authorities say a Florida principal has been arrested after she was caught partially unclothed in a marijuana-smoke-filled car with a student. Police say they found Morton, 45, in the car with an 18-year-old senior from the school.

President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday commiserated with the family of Nigeria’s first President, Chief Nnamdi Azikiwe, over the death of his son, Chief Chukwuma Bamidele Azikiwe.

He died at Borromeo Hospital, Onitsha, after a long fight with respiratory related ailment at the age of 75.
