'Our National Anthem is very Bland and Uninspiring' - Etcetera

After hearing of the proposal of some delegates at the ongoing confab that we should revert to the old national anthem, I sat by my piano and played both anthems. Playing and singing to the current anthem “Arise O’ Compatriot” was basically easy because I had done that countless times and I wasn’t even looking at the piano keys as I sang through the verses.

I downloaded the lyrics of the old anthem just to be sure I was singing the right words. I know the tune by heart because my dad frequently sang it to me when I was a little school boy. And I felt nothing as usual singing it. But right from the first line of the old anthem “Nigeria We Hail Thee,” I felt a strange sense of pride and patriotism. I felt very strange because like every Nigerian, I am saddened that as a country, we have lost our way.

Pakistan Girls Education Activist Malala Yousafzai to visit Nigeria to Campaign for Chibok Girls

Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani education activist, is on her way to Nigeria to campaign on behalf of the school girls abducted by Islamist militant sect Boko Haram.

The 17-year-old who also supported the viral #BringBackOurGirls social media campaign is expected to be in Abuja, Nigeria on Sunday, Telegraph UK confirms

Malala Yousafzai will meet with relatives of kidnapped girls and will seek an audience with President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.

Her presence will hopefully put more pressure on the government to help bring back the girls.

Malala Yousafzai became famous when she was shot by the Taliban in October 2012 after she spoke publicly about girls’ rights to education.

Good News: ASUP suspends strike, polytechnics to resume next week

All Polytechnic can collectively breathe a sigh of relief as the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) have finally suspended the nationwide strike which has been on since October last year.
This piece of good news was made public this morning by the National Publicity Secretary of the Union, Clement Chirman who added that all schools are expected to re-open by Tuesday next week for academic activities.

The decision to end the 10-month old strike was made at the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the union held in Abuja.

This meeting is following another one which the Union had with the new Minister of Education and former governor of Kano State, Ibrahim Shekarau which was generally described as “fruitful”.

Muyideen Salaam, a 35 year-old apprentice at Aketegbo community in Seme, Badagry area of Lagos, gave this chilling confession of how he killed a 13 year-old boy, Rilwan Amuda, in his crave for materialism.

The Ibadan-born suspect claimed he was tempted to opt for money ritual after his wife left with their two children when feeding became an uphill task for him.

Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) Begins Nationwide Strike Today

 ABUJA (NAN) ─ The Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) on Friday began a nationwide strike in the state courts in the 36 states of the federation.

The National President of JUSUN, Marwan Adamu, who confirmed the strike, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the Federal Judiciary workers had been directed to be on standby.

JUSUN is seeking the implementation of a Federal High Court Abuja orders on the financial autonomy of state judiciaries and a technical committee to implement the FAAC meeting resolution of June 17.

Another Nigerian guy commits suicide over jilted lover

A few weeks back, we brought you the story of a guy that committed suicide after his fiancee called off her engagement. Responding to the post, some commenters said it is only yoruba guys that "love too much' and commit suicide over a woman. Well another guy has committed suicide because his boo jilted him and yes, he is not YORUBA!

21-year-old student of Maritime Academy Oron, Effiong Otu committed suicide by hanging himself on a rope in his room on Thursday morning after he was jilted by his girl friend.According to reports,this happened on the same day he was marking the 10th  anniversary of his dad who died in a car accident. After the anniversary, his family members left the house and he went to a neighbour to borrow a rope.
Moments later, the suspicious neighbours wondered why he needed a rope and went to check on him but found the door locked. Before  they broke down the door,he had passed on.

In a new preview for Keeping Up With The Kardashians, Khloe Kardashian confessed that her now ex-husband Lamar Odom cheated on her with another woman on her birthday last year and she lied to her family to  cover for him.

"Lamar is doing all this press because he is on a new team. But what he is saying is just not true. Saying that he talks to me everyday and that we are working things out. But I haven't been able to reach him for months. And it almost gets my hopes up.'

Miracle! How this 2-year-old baby was found at Murtala Airport five days after she was stolen

A two-year old baby girl, Mercy Osunbawo, stolen by unidentified men from her parents’ home,  at 10, Adeite Osunbawo Street, Ejigbo, Lagos, has been found at the local wing of the Murtala Mohammed Airport, Ikeja, Lagos.

She was found at the airport at about 2: 00 a.m. on Wednesday unaccompanied before she was rescued and handed over to the airport police.
It is not certain how Mercy got to the airport but she was stolen while sleeping in between her parents at their Ejigbo home.

The father of the girl, Olanrewaju Osunbawo, who confirmed the incident to PM NEWS, said that on the night the incident happened, he and members of his family had a vigil in their home till 2:30 a.m. before they went to sleep.

16yr old rape goes viral on social media: "No human being deserves this"

 This is so wrong and heartbreaking to see. A 16 year old Texas girl named Jada (pictured left) has spoken out for the first time after photos of her unconscious naked body went viral online after she was drugged and raped at a party with her fellow high-schoolers.

Some sick people mimicked Jada's pose by taking photos copying the position of her limp body splayed out on the floor and posting them to Twitter and Vine using the hashtag '#jadapose'. (pictured right). How sick is this?

The victim decided to talk about the attack in an interview with KHOU on Tuesday night; "I’m just angry,” Jada said. According to Jada, she was invited to a party at a fellow high schooler’s house. Meet the World's Tallest Female Teenager

  Rumeysa Gelgi, a 17-year-old girl from Turkey has been named the Worlds tallest female teenager. At 7ft tall ,she received the Guinness World Record award  in her hometown of Safranbolu, Karabük.
Rumeysa whose height is caused by a condition,Weaver Syndrome( a rare genetic disorder that causes rapid growth)is also an 11th grade high school student and her parents and older siblings, are all ‘normal’ height.

She said.....

'I like being different from everyone else. It’s interesting and makes me feel special.  It also provides me with easy access to high places, and looking down at people from above isn’t a bad thing either.'

Her record will feature in the 2015 Guinness World Records book...

Court of Appeal dismisses application for stay of execution filed by four suspended lawmakers of EDHA

he Court of Appeal sitting in Benin City has dismissed in its entirety the application for stay of execution brought before it by four suspended lawmakers of Edo State House of Assembly against the injunction issued by a Benin High Court.

Justice Morounkeji Ogunwunmiju, who read the ruling on behalf of his brother justices ruled that the said suspended members could not seek any relief from the Court of Appeal while they were in contempt or disobedience of the order of the High Court.
