Court summons Lagos Commissioner for criminal allegations

By Innocent Anaba

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, yesterday, directed the prosecution to produce at the next adjourned date, the Commissioner for Insurance, Mr. Fola Daniel to court to answer to criminal charges leveled against him by the Attorney General of the Federation,   AGF.
Trial Judge, Justice Okon Abang, while ruling on an application by the prosecution for a bench warrant to be issued against the Insurance Chief, held that it would be improper to do so hastily, particularly, for an accused that has not been formally arraigned before him.

Having refused to grant the bench warrant, the trial judge ordered the prosecution to ensure that it produced the accused to court at the next adjourned date and subsequently adjourned till February 6, 2014 for the arraignment of the accused.
While the AGF is represented by Mrs C Enembo, the accused was not represented even though the prosecution insisted that he had been properly put on notice.

Daniel is facing a six count charge bordering on criminal misrepresentation of facts and deliberate falsehood.
Justice Okon is the second judge to sit over the matter.
The first judge was Justice Ibrahim Buba, who struck out the suit on the ground that it was not properly filed late last year.

At that time, the accused was represented by Professor Taiwo Osipitan, SAN. All through the pendency of the suit, the accused never appeared in court.
His counsel, Osipitan had argued that because a private prosecutor, Mr   Chijioke Ndubuisi initiated the charge without first obtaining the fiat of the AGF, there was no charge to be taken over by the office of the AGF.
Though Ndubuisi later got the AGF to take over the prosecution, Osipitan said it can’t happen because the charge did not comply with the rules of the Federal High Court due to the manner it was filed.
However, Enembo maintained that the office of the AGF has power to take over any prosecution initiated by a private prosecutor by virtue of section 174 (1)(b) of the Constitution.

But in his ruling, Justice Buba agreed with Osipitan and struck out the suit on the ground that it was defective.
As a result, the office of the AGF initiated this fresh charge which is now before Abang.
A private prosecutor, Ndubuisi, had filed the motion together with a six-count charge against Daniel at the court and subsequently wrote for a fiat of the AGF. The AGF declined the fiat but instead elected to do the prosecution.

In the said charge accompanying Ndubuisi’s motion, it was alleged that Daniel deliberately made a number of misleading and malicious misrepresentations against an insurance company, Alliance and General Insurance Limited to a number of public officers and agencies with the intention of damaging the reputation of the said insurance company.

3 feared dead, 7 rescued as boat capsizes

By GODFREY BIVBERE
Three persons were feared dead after the  motor boat on which they were riding from Tincan Island Port to Ojo area of Lagos  capsized Thursday at about 8.30 pm while returning from work.
A passenger who identified himself as Peter, told Saturday Vanguard that the incident occurred when the operator  of the boat tried to maneuver his boat  from  another oncoming boat but eventually lost control. Peter who claimed to be in another boat when the incident happened, explained that they had to go and assist the 10 passengers in the small boat.

According to him, they were only able to rescue seven of the passengers while they could not see the other three. As at yesterday morning when Saturday Vanguard visited the area, the boat operators refused to comment on the issue but confirmed that the incident actually occurred.
One of the operators said they were expecting the corpses of the  passengers to come afloat yesterday.

Efforts to get the reaction of the Managing Director of the Lagos State Water Transport Authority, LASTWA, Yinka Morinho, on the issue proved abortive as he  did not pick his call or respond to text message sent to him.
Boat rides between Apapa and Ojo axes have  improved among people living around Ojo area but work at Apapa.

A freight forwarder, Okey Ibeawuchi, who spoke with Saturday Vanguard on the issue said he has not seen Mile2 for about two months because he prefers to go by boat as it saves his time. According to Ibeawuchi, at the height of the traffic jam on that route, he spent between five and six hours to and from work every day and that was not good for his health.

He noted that although he knows the risk involved in traveling by boat, he still preferred it as the journey by boat takes between 20 and 45 minutes depending on the boat by which one is traveling. The freight forwarder explained that while the boat with 150 horse power takes between 15 and 25 minutes, the 75 horse power boat takes between 35 to 45 minutes.

While he acknowledged that passengers are mandated to wear live jackets as security measure , he said it is not enough as the boats do not have cover. He called on the Lagos state government to come to the aid of the operators by providing them soft loan with which to acquire better boats to ply the route.

Festus Keyamo alleges plan to kill Charles Okah

Counsel to Charles Okah, one of the accused persons  being tried for the October 1, bombing in Abuja, Barrister Festus Keyamo has alleged attempt to kill his client, following  refusal by prison officials to administer   High Blood Pressure drugs on him.
Keyamo in a letter addressed to the Controller General of Nigeria Prisons and made available to journalists in Abuja yesterday, accused a certain Deputy Controller of Prisons of refusing to administer the drugs to Okah.
The letter signed by Barrister John Ainetor, Esq and  Ms Benedicta  Obanye, both of Keyamo’s law firm read: “ It is our brief that on 7th of January, 2014, the Kuje Prisons Clinic issued a drug prescription for the treatment of the High Blood Pressure ailment of our client, specifically Amlodipine 10mg.

File photo: Charles Okah being led out of Abuja Court.
“On the 9th of January, 2014 when the wife, Mrs. Okah, visited our client in Prisons, she was informed that the said drugs have not been bought due to lack of finance, and as such, she was requested to purchase them for our client. Consequently, our client’s wife immediately purchased the said drugs and handed same   over to the prisons officer in charge who seized them and refused to administer same to our client, thereby denying him medication  despite his critical health condition. The said DCP further said that his action was based on the press release by the family of our client on 13th of January, 2014, where they raised alarm about his health condition and that no one can do anything about it.
“ Sir, the conduct of the prison official is very worrisome, in addition to several other inhuman treatments meted to our client in Kuje prisons. These calculated attempts to  snuff life out of him   have repeatedly occurred, which include intentional denial of medication, refusal to administer the correct and appropriate drugs when prescribed by the prisons clinic, the initial refusal to fumigate the cell and the subsequent fumigation while our client was inside; the discovery of a scorpion in the cell and various other life-threatening events.
“ The foregoing suggests beyond doubt that there is a plot to kill our client in Kuje prisons. This is more so because our client, who has only one kidney is hypertensive . It is noteworthy that it was circumstances of this nature that led to the death of Tiemkemfa Osovwo (alias General Gbokos) sometime in 2012. It is likely that similar fate may befall our client if urgent action is not taken about our complaint”

Chelsea’s Essien signs for AC Milan

ROME (AFP) – Chelsea’s Ghanian international midfielder Michael Essien has joined AC Milan, the Italian Serie A side announced on Friday.
“Michael Essien will arrive in Milan this evening,” AC Milan said in a statement, praising the “high level curriculum” of the player.
Essien, 31, arrives on a free transfer having signed an 18-month deal with the northern outfit placed 11th in Serie A, the Italian press reported.
Essien is the first recruit of new Milan coach Clarence Seedorf, and he could play in their Champions League last 16 tie against Atletico Madrid next month with two Milan midfielders suspended for the match – Riccardo Montolivo and Ghanian Sulley Muntari.
Essien started his career with Corsican side Bastia (2000-2003), making his name at French club Lyon (2003-2005) before joining Chelsea (2005-2012).

He teamed up again with Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid (2012-2013), but headed back to England with the Portuguese coach to Chelsea this season, but has failed to feature for the English side.

Before confirmatiuon of the move Mourinho had said Essien would be allowed to leave the club.
“Michael Essien is, in this moment, in a position where he can go or he can stay. If he stays we’re more than happy he stays.

“But he’s another player who gave everything to this club and, if a great situation for him arrives, for his future or to give him a chance to go to the World Cup with more years of contract and a career at the high level, the same way Chelsea let him go to Madrid when I was there.”

Kangaroo court orders Indian woman to be gang-raped for dating a man from another village

A Kangaroo court in a village in India ordered a 20year old woman (pictured above) to be gang-raped by 13 men for having a relationship with a man from another village, Times of India reports.

The woman was locked in a shed and raped overnight by 13 men, 10 of which had been 'judges' in the kangaroo court which sentenced her in a village near Suri in west Bengal state, police said.

The woman is currently fighting for her life in hospital while all 13 men have since been arrested for rape. Among them is the village headman. Continue...

The woman managed to tell her story to The Times of India.
'I had an affair with a man. We were dragged to a gathering where our community headman was present. They told me to pay 50,000 rupees (£490). When I said I couldn't, they brutalised me.' She told the paper
The woman's distraught mother told the paper.
'They tortured my daughter and dumped her home late at night. We were threatened not to go to police. We tried to go to Bolpur hospital, but they stopped us.'

The victim and her lover from another village and religion were found sitting and talking by a group of tribal men from the victim's village on Monday January 19th. They dragged the two of them to a religious place known as a 'than' where a makeshift court was hastily put together on the orders of the tribal chief.

Police said that the young man was told to pay a fine of £245 and warned that if he did not pay, men from the village would 'have fun with the girl.'

With no money forthcoming, the woman was allegedly tied to a tree before she was forced into a shed and raped continuously until Tuesday morning.

The victim surrounded by her family. They managed to take her to hospital two days after the brutal assault and it was at the hospital that the crime came to light and police informed.

Tweets above from Mallam El Rufai's son. According to reports, men of the State Security Service (SSS), this afternoon stormed the home of former FCT minister, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai to pick him for questioning at their office in Abuja. El-Rufai wasn't home when the SSS men came calling. Continue...

Premium Times reports that the SSS had invited El-Rufai to their office yesterday Thursday Jan. 23rd to answer some questions in connection with a statement credited to him that there might be violence if the 2015 general elections were not free and fair.

The former minister made the comment while speaking at the Transformed to Transform, T2T Nigeria, Conference and Career Fair, a leadership and empowerment initiative for the National Youth Service Corps members in Abuja on Wednesday.
He was reported to have said the 2015 elections could be marred by riots and other forms of violence that might lead to loss of lives and properties unless the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and the security agencies ensured they were free.
The former minister however refused to respond to the SSS’ invitation on the ground that he had a pending suit against the agency over his detention in a hotel in Awka, Anambra State,  during the governorship election in that state last November 16.
He also told the Director General of the Service, Ita Ekpeyong, that he was willing to meet with him in his home or office or that in the alternative the SSS should produce a warrant of arrest.
Spokesperson of the SSS, Marylyn Ogar, had earlier issued a statement Thursday warning those making provocative statements ahead of the 2015 general election to desist from such or face the full weight of the law.
Ms. Ogar said the attention of the service had been drawn to incessant provocation statements by some Nigerians threatening violence ahead of the election. She did not mention any name
“Such comments are offensive, misguided and directed at stirring hate among Nigerians,” she said. "This service and other law enforcement agencies have the mandate to protect the country and its citizens. We, therefore, warn all subversive elements that are bent on promoting divisive and disruptive agenda to refrain from such as the full weight of the law shall henceforth be brought to bear accordingly.”

Hong Kong billionaire doubles reward for any man who can make lesbian daughter straight

Hong Kong billionaire Cecil Chao, has offered a whooping $130million to any man who can sweep his lesbian daughter, Gigi Chao (right) off her feet, marry her and give him grandchildren. Gigi ran away with her female lover sometime last year in France.

The billionaire businessman who made headline in Sept 2012 when he offered a reward of $65million to any man who can take his daughter off her female lover, has reportedly upped the money to $130million after all prospective suitors failed to win his daughter's heart. And according to reports, many men tried. His first offer reportedly attracted more more 20,000 unsuccessful suitors. I'm sure some of them were Nigerians...lol.

In a recent interview with Financial Times, Mr Chao said:
"I will give them a moderately deluxe life. I would not force her to marry a man, but obviously I would prefer her to be married and give me grand children"
Gigi Chao in an interview with Malaysian newspaper, Nanyang Siang Pau, said;
“I don’t think my dad’s offering of any amount of money would be able to attract a man I would find attractive. I would be happy to befriend any man willing to donate huge amounts of money to my charity, Faith in Love, provided they don't mind that I already have a wife. Third and lastly, thank you daddy, I love you too.”

Billboard Magazine dubs Jay Z and Beyonce the most powerful couple in music...

From Billboard

Who in the music industry did so better in the last year than this power couple?
Leveraging their star power to release new albums in unprecedented ways—Jay Z through Samsung and Beyoncé through iTunes—they instantly changed how the industry and fans thought about interacting with music. He gave his album away; she charged a premium price for hers. But they both used the element of surprise to restore the excitement that used to accompany a new release, before that impact was dulled by the endless thunder of carefully plotted promotion.
In short, they proved that content truly is king. Or, in this case, king and queen.

Striking health workers paralyse activities in hospitals nationwide

By Our Reporters

As the three-day nationwide warning strike called by the Joint Health Sector Unions, JOHESU, in league with the Association of Health Professionals ends today, services were paralysed for the second day in most health institutions nationwide.
This was even as the striking members of the Joint Health Sector Unions, JOHESU, meeeting with the Labour Minister, Chief Emeka Wogu and his counterpart in the Ministry of Health, Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu, was inconclusive. It was said that both parties could not agree.

The striking unions had earlier vowed not to attend any conciliation meeting that lacks government representation, insisting that this was the only guarantee that decisions taken would be implemented.
In Lagos, the general atmosphere in most hospitals visited showed that the strike was total, and only medical doctors were around to render services, which was a difficult exercise due to inaccessibility of support services from nurses, pharmacists, physiotherapists, laboratory scientists, etc.
Although the doctors went extra length to care for patients on admission in the wards, intake of new patients remained suspended as they were advised to seek care in private hospitals pending the termination of the strike.

Patients who turned up in the various hospitals were not attended to. At the Lagos University teaching Hospital, LUTH, Idi Araba and Federal Medical Centre, Ebute Metta, virtually all the outpatient clinics were under lock and key. Several patients were hurriedly discharged to cushion the absence of nurses and other health care workers.
A doctor who spoke on condition of anonymity said doctors were not involved in the strike. He said they were on duty and saw some patients with critical health conditions
In Benue State, services were grounded at hospitals within and around Makurdi the state capital. Most of them were deserted except for medical doctors who were seen providing skeletal clinical services to patients with critical health conditions.

At the Makurdi Federal Medical Centre and the Makurdi General Hospital there was total compliance as no nurse was seen on duty, same for other non medical staff who stayed away from work as directed by JOHESU.
When contacted, the Chairman of JOHESU, Federal Medical Centre chapter, Comrade Moses Shausu said there had been full compliance by members of the union.
A visit to Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital,  NAUTH, Nnewi, revealed that the hospital has been reduced to a shadow of itself. Several relatives were seen withdrawing their sick from the hospital.
Branch Chairman, JOHESU, Comrade Gerald Adinma who spoke with newsmen in Nnewi, warned that the ongoing warning strike may transform to an indefinite strike if the Federal Government fails to change its attitude.

He pointed out the rumoured plan to privatize the laboratory, pharmacy and accounts departments in the teaching hospitals would be met with a stiff resistance because it would be an evil wind that would not do the health sector any good.
Adinma said that if the Federal Government thought that it could save cost through privatization. It should start with the medical doctors who goes home with jumbo salaries outside having their private hospitals.

8 farmers docked for forcing widow to dance naked in market

BY PETER DURU
MAKURDI — Eight farmers were, yesterday, arraigned before a Makurdi Chief Magistrate Court for allegedly stripping a widow, one Mrs. Ann Adikwu, and parading her at a market square in Orokam, Ogbadibo Local Government Area of Benue State.
The accused persons were charged with criminal conspiracy, assault on a woman with intent to outrage her modesty; exhibition of obscene pictures and theft punishable under Sections 97 (1), 269, 203 and 288 of the penal code.

According to the First Information Report, FIR, filed in the court by the prosecutor, Inspector George Nyev, the victim had written a letter of complaint to the Benue State Commissioner of Police on November 18, 2013.
He said: “In the letter, the victim stated that she was in her matrimonial home in the morning of September 18 mourning her late husband, when one Omanche Adikwu led his family members and some youths of Orokam village to attack her.

“The group forcefully stripped her naked and went ahead to arrest one Augustine Odoh and forced  both of them to dance naked at the market square while photographs of the dance were taken by the accused persons.”
According to her,  the group also carted away her clothes and jewellery valued at over N860,500.00 and cash totalling  N190,000.

At the commencement of the hearing, the prosecuting officer told the court that the accused persons were arrested during police investigations, adding that the accused confessed to the crime during investigations.
He asked for a date for the commencement of hearing into the matter.

However, all the accused persons pleaded not guilty to the offence.
In his submission, counsel to the accused persons, Mr. Cletus Ujah, who did not oppose the application for a hearing, however, applied for the bail of his clients.

Maheeda’s releases controversial video ‘Naija bad Girl

By Charles Mgbolu

Controversy sells and true, controversial singer/rapper Maheeda hangs on to it for dear life as she releases her highly anticipated ‘Naija bad girl’ video which had rained criticisms on her after she released behind-the-scene raunchy pictures of the video shoot.
- See more at: http://sabi9ja.blogspot.com/

*Maheeda on set
True to the pictures earlier circulated Maheeda was completely nude in some scenes in the video. But then, she was gracious to have a clean cut version put out for those who just can’t stand it.
Nudity, however may not be the only issue she has to contend with in this work. Already those who have watched the video are alleging she is a lame rapper. True, her delivery was weak, with shabby lyrics that could literally be counted.
Aside her body, only the hook in the chorus made some kind of a lasting impression.
An army of critics builds again and it only causes a reminder of the same treatment controversial actress turned singer Tonto Dike got last year after she released her singles ‘Hi’ and ‘It’s Ova’.
Maheeda however handles criticisms well  so we do not expect a war to break out on social media.
The video was shot in a studio in Lagos by Frizzle N Bizzle films.
Watch the explicit video here and the clean video here and share what you think.

Heavens won’t fall if Eagles lose – NFF

By Jacob Ajom

The Nigeria Football Federation has expressed satisfaction with the performance of Super Eagles Team B, campaigning at the ongoing African Nations Championship in South Africa.
First Vice Chairman of the federation, Chief Mike Umeh told Sports Vanguard in Cape Town that the team have done well so far and even if it crashes out at this stage of the tournament the board will not do anything rash.

’’I want to assure you that heavens will not fall, even if the team lose to Morocco on Saturday. Football is a sporting event. If we lose, we will take it in good faith. Look at the fact that even the hosts are out. In football, like every other game, you win some and you lose some,’’ Umeh said, but quickly added, ‘’well, so far, the boys have been playing well after their defeat to Mali so I don’t expect they lose.’’

The former chairman of Rangers International football club of Enugu recalled that South Africa had been a ‘’fertile ground’’ for Nigerian teams in the past and Saturday’s match won’t be an exception.
‘’We have been playing well in South Africa, we have a pedigree. Remember only last year our senior team was here to pick the Afcon. We are going to get past Morocco whom we respect very well, anyway,’’ Umeh said.

’’We know the North Africans play fast and tactically sound but we have a technical bench that can outwit them. Keshi and his team know what to do. We should expect a good game.’’

What many faith people fail to grasp is that God blesses His people through joints and bands i.e strategic relationships He establishes and by associations He creates in your life. When you show little respect for those people you dishonor the work of God and actually cut off His supply. Satan is working 24/7 either to create an offense in your heart towards those strategic people or to inject pride in you such that you see yourself above that which you really are and see no need for those relationships. When you cut off, then he i.e. Satan can access the other relationships, which were actually being sustained by the strategic one, which you dishonored in your blindness.....

Naomi Oni's friend Mary Konye found guilty of acid attack

The lady on the left is Mary Konye, the jealous friend accused of attacking Naomi Oni (pictured right before the attack) with acid on December 30th 2012 while disguised in a Muslim veil.

Mary was found guilty of the attack today and will be sentenced on March 7th. Face of evil!!

Mary Konye, the 21 year old jealous friend accused of attacking Naomi Oni with acid on Dec. 30th 2012 while disguised in a Muslim veil has been found guilty of the crime.

The jury heard how a day after attacking her friend with acid that disfigured her for life, Mary Konye pretended to give her a shoulder to cry on, sending Naomi a text that read "OMG, I can't believe it."

The pair, who had been friends since secondary school, fell out in April 2011 after Naomi allegedly accused Konye of texting her boyfriend and called her an "ugly monster".

Konye later claimed in court that Naomi set up the attack and asked her (Mary) to 'play the stalker' and throw the acid on her face, which was all part of an elaborate plan to be rich and famous. But the jury of eight men and four women didn't buy her story and found her guilty.

Mary Konye will be sentenced March 7th.

Pic of Naomi Oni's attacker following her moments before dousing her with acid

The eerie pic above was shown in court today to jurors in the Naomi Oni acid bath case. It's a CCTV image allegedly showing her friend Mary Konye dressed in Muslim veil and walking closely behind Naomi, just moments before she doused her with acid and destroyed her looks forever!

That same night, the jealous and obsessed student posted a pic of Nightmare on Elm Street horror character Freddie Krueger on her WhatsApp profile pic & wrote 'Who looks like Wrong Turn now?'

A friend of Mary Konye told the police that Mary planned to attack Naomi and ruin her looks "so she would know 'how it feels' to feel bad about her appearance', after Naomi told her she looked like something out of a horror movie. Continue...

Naomi's lawyer said in court today
'Kamilah (Mary's friend) states that the defendant was insecure about her looks and that Naomi had insulted her. And there was a particular insult that was used, and a reference to a particular horror film and a reference to a particular disfigured character in the horror film - "Wrong Turn". It involves cannibal characters and disfigured characters, one in particular called a Wrong Turn.
'And Naomi had been rude to the defendant and said she looked like a Wrong Turn, that particular insult stung Mary Konye. Kamilah states that the defendant would complain that the victim would never compliment her about her looks.
'Kamilah Andrews states that this greatly affected the defendant, because she admired Naomi, almost to the point of obsession.'
'Kamilah states that the defendant would repeatedly say what she would like to do to Naomi. She states that the defendant would say 'What if I bought acid and threw it in her face, so she would know how she makes me feel?'
'Kamilah also states that the defendant told her she had joked to others about throwing acid on someone and that someone had suggested to the defendant that she should wear a 'nijab' [sic] so the police could not identify her.
'Following the attack on the victim Kamilah saw that the defendant had updated her profile on 'WhatsApp'.
'It appears that the photograph on the defendant's profile was changed and it then displayed a photograph of Freddie Krueger, the scarred-face character from the horror film 'Nightmare on Elm Street'.
'Kamilah states that the photograph was accompanied by a message stating 'Who looks like Wrong Turn now?''
School friend Safiye Laviniere said Konye changed her status on Blackberry Messenger so a message read 'She better not mess with me or I will make her face look like this' next to a photo of Freddy Krueg

Adaeze
My pride
“Special” is the word
That is used to describe
Something one of a kind
Like a hug or a sunset
Or a person who spreads love
With a smile or kind gesture
“Special” applies to something
That is admired and precious
Which can never be replaced
Ada,”Special” is the word that best describes you

Yvonne
My princess Yvonne
What can I say to let you know
What a special person you have been in my life
My best friend, helper, student and my mirror
I love so many things about you
Your smile, your soul and the fact that you
don’t make me feel old
I love the fact that you are so charismatic
Like me and people can really see that
You’re nothing like the rest
Thanks for being the daughter I always wanted
I couldn’t have asked for a better one
I love you so much

Dominique
My pride and joy
So many things I want to give you
So many things I want to teach you
Teach you about courage and strength
When standing tall is no longer easy
But standing for the ones who can’t
Thinking and fending for yourself
Because you’re daddy’s makeover

Teach you to fight back
To never back down
How to pick yourself back up
When you have been knocked down
Fight for what you believe
Because you’re daddy’s make over

I gave you my stubbornness
Gave you my pride
Gave you my temper
Teaching you not to take crap
To speak your mind no matter who
Work for what you want
Because you’re daddy’s make over

Love you more than you will ever know
Because in you I see me
That’s why you’re daddy’s make over

Olivia (Charly Boy's grand daughter)
My Princess Olivia
I have been blessed with many grand children
But you’re special
Like a gem, precious and polished
I watched you grow into a woman
Heaven helps anyone who hurts you
You’ll never really know how much you mean to me
A grandfather’s love buried so deep
That only my heart can see
