People Who Feel Younger May Live Longer - MUST READ

A new study says that if you want to live longer, you may just need to feel younger. That was the conclusion of scientists in London after they studied seniors who felt young as compared to seniors who felt their own age or older. The experiment involved 6,000 people and spanned a period of over eight years. The research was published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine.

The study included a series of controls including factors that could hasten someone’s death, such as smoking, access to health care, level of physical activity, prior diseases and more. At the end of the study period, scientists found that adults who felt younger had a significantly reduced risk of dying.

They had just a 14 percent death rate as opposed to a 25 percent rate of death among adults who felt older than they actually were, CBS reports, and those who felt older rather than younger had a 40 percent overall increased risk of dying. People who felt themselves to be their exact age had a 19 percent death rate, Web MD reports.

So in order to live longer, just how much younger do you have to feel? Apparently not that much. Most of the adults in the study who enjoyed a reduced risk of death felt an average of just three years (or more) younger than they actually were. The study found a correlation between feeling younger and living longer, but experts point out that establishing a link does not prove causation. Still, the study results seem to indicate that feeling younger probably cannot hurt a person’s chances of enjoying a long life span.

The benefits from feeling younger than a person’s actual age were most pronounced when it came to heart health. Double the amount of people who felt older died from heart disease than did those who felt younger. The reason for this may be that a person’s emotional state can impact the heart.

The bottom line, researchers say, is that “optimism pays off” when it comes to your health. So why not trying a positive outlook and give feeling younger a whirl? It will make you feel great and possibly even lead to a longer life span.
