Michigan Boy, 9, Killed by 12-Year-Old Boy in Playground Stabbing

A 9-year-old boy was fatally stabbed by a 12-year-old boy at a playground in Western Michigan on Monday.

Kentwood police said the victim, who was stabbed repeatedly in the back, ran home and collapsed on his porch, according to The Grand Rapids Press. He reportedly died later that night at a hospital.

Just after the attack, the older boy reportedly called the cops from a neighbor's home to turn himself in. He was "very calm," according to Glen Stacy, the man whose phone was used to dial 911.

"The only time he raised his voice was when the police came," Stacy told The Grand Rapids Press.

According to Stacy, the 12-year-old yelled at the police when they went to help the victim. "Hello. I'm right here. You're going the wrong way," the boy allegedly said.

Neighbor Barb Poelman told the Associated Press that she heard the boys screaming, but she just thought they were playing. It wasn't until she heard the 9-year-old's mother on the porch that she realized something was wrong.

"She was screaming 'Where is the ambulance?' while her boy was laying on the porch bleeding," Poelman recalled.

Police said the older boy was evaluated at a hospital before being taken to the Kent County Juvenile Detention Center. The motive for the attack is still being investigated, according to Kentwood Police Chief Thomas Hillen.

The 12-year-old was charged with murder at a court hearing on Tuesday and has pled not guilty, according to AP reports. A preliminary hearing has been set for Aug. 13.
