Blame it on electricity: Legislator says power problem responsible for WAEC failure

Chief Yomi Ogunnusi, a member of the House of Representatives, says the epileptic power situation in the country is responsible for the mass failure of students who sat for the 2014 West African Secondary School Certificate, WASSCE.

The legislator said the unreliable power supply witnessed in several parts of the nation doesn’t bode well for learning and that it discourages students from studying hard.

Ogunnusi, who represents Ifako-Ijaiye constituency in Lagos, made the statement while presenting scholarships to secondary school students in Ifako-Ijaiye, constituency, Lagos, at the weekend.

The result was released on Monday, 11 August, and only 31.28percent of candidates that sat the 2014 West African Secondary School Certificate, WASSCE, had credits in five subjects, including English and Mathematics, which was a marginal decline in the performance of candidates who took the exam in 2013.

In 2013, 1,689,188 candidates registered for the examination and 889,636 candidates obtained six credits and above, while 1,074,065 others obtained five credits and above.
