Late Sani Abacha's Son Mohammed Faces Charges For Stealing N446 Billion

Late Sani Abacha's Son Mohammed Faces Charges For Stealing N446 Billion

The Federal Government has filed a new lawsuit against Mohammed Abacha, son of the late General Sani Abacha, accusing him of unlawfully receiving about N446.3 billion stolen from the Government in 1995-1998.

In the nine-court charge, Mr. Mohammed is accused of "dishonestly receiving stolen property" and "voluntarily assisting in concealing money".

It would be recalled that earlier, Mr. Mohammed was chared on 121 counts along with Atiku Bagudu; Mr. Bagudu has been excluded from the fresh charge.

According to the new charge, the stolen money include 141,100,000 pound sterling and 384,353,000 U.S. dollars made up of cash and travellers cheques.

Mohammed Abacha is the eldest surviving son of the late general Sani Abacha and Maryam Abacha. During his father's military rule, he was involved in money laundering schemes.

In 1999, Mr. Abacha was arrested and charged with the murder of Kudirat Abiola (wife of MKO Abiola) and the attempted murder of head of an opposition newspaper. Sani Abacha's Chief Security Officer Hamza al-Mustapha was his co-defendant.

More details later.
