WHO Declares Liberia Ebola free

The World Health Organisation on Saturday declared Liberia free of the Ebola Virus Disease.

This declaration was made by the United Nation’s health agency 42 days after the last laboratory-confirmed case was buried on March 28 this year.

According to the WHO, Liberia’s last case was a woman in the greater Monrovia area who developed symptoms on March 20 and died on March 27. The organisation stated further that the source of her infection was under investigation and that the 332 people who might have been exposed to the patient were identified and closely monitored.

The global health body however urged the Liberian government to remain on “high alert” in view of the continued outbreaks of the EVD in Guinea and Sierra Leone. The organisation said it would maintain an enhanced staff presence in Liberia until the end of the year as the response transitions from outbreak control, to vigilance for imported cases, to the recovery of essential health services
