What AU Has To Say About Gen. Buhari’s Victory

As the All Progressive Congress (APC) presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari emerged the winner of March 28 presidential election, the African Union has this to say about the polls.

African Union (AU) chief Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, in a statement issued on Wednesday at the Ethiopian headquarters of the 54-member AU bloc, congratulated General Buhari for emerging victorious in Nigeria’s presidential election, and praised the outgoing President Goodluck Jonathan for graciously accepting the results.



Vanguard reports that Dlamini-Zuma said the result “demonstrates the maturity of democracy” in Nigeria, adding that she she hoped the people “will be united in facing the challenges of stability, security and development in their country.”

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Pilot reported that the President elect, General Buhari will address his supporters and the nation at 11.000am on Wednesday.

Party officials announced the decision to cancel the address at about 12.54am after a long wait for the INEC to officially announce the winner of the election.

The APC presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari was declared the winner of March 28 presidential elections by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

According to INEC, the former military head of state won the polls with 15,424,921 votes, or 53.95 percent, of the 28,587,564 total valid ballots cast.

Buhari has contested the presidential election three consecutive times but failed. He contested against General Olusegun Obasanjo in 2003, late Umaru Musa Yar’Adua in 2007, and Goodluck Jonathan in 2011, before finally securing victory on March 28, 2015.

The ex-general is expected to be sworn in on May 29, which is Nigeria’s democracy day.

The President elect has been receiving several messages from well meaning Nigerians across the globe even from incumbent President and Governor of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) the he has unseat.
