Armed police scrambled to house in rural town after shots were fired at a car

Armed police surrounded a house after shots were fired in a rural Australian town.

It is believed a real estate agent was the target of today’s terrifying attack, which took place in isolated Mangrove Mountain in New South Wales, located north of Sydney.

At 9am local time shots were fired at a car, but no one was injured.

Police officers, armed with assault rifles and backed by an armoured vehicle, entered the home later that day - but no one was in it.

9 News reports a man who was driving and the gunman had earlier had a confrontation about a local matter.

A police spokesman confirmed a firearm and ammunition had been found at the house.

The area was cordoned off and investigations are continuing.

Gun ownership is widespread in Australia, but crime involving a firearm is rare.

As of 2007 about five per cent of Australian adults, around 765,000 people, own and use firearms for hunting, controlling feral animals and target shooting.
