Joseph Mbu Charges AIT Amaechi Anakwue to Court for Defamation

AIT senior correspondent Amaechi Anakwue has been charged to an Abuja Magistrate court by Joseph Mbu.

According to a release by AIT just now, the senior correspondent is currently facing a Judge for calling the AIG Zone 7, Joseph Mbu 'controversial' on a TV programme.

Former commissioner of police for Rivers state and the Federal Capital territory (FCT) and current Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of police for zone 7, Mbu Joseph had reportedly detained Amaechi Anakwue, who anchors the program “Matters Arising” for referring to him as controversial.

Mbu was said to have been incensed over the statement Anakwue made duringan episode of the
program earlier in the week, apparently in reference to his seemingly turbulent tenure as commissioner of police in Rivers state, where he had several face-offs with governor Rotimi Amaechi, allegedly on presidential orders. The presenter was invited for questioning by Mbu on Thursday, October 2, 2014, but on reaching the station, he was allegedly harassed by policemen and subsequently detained.

Following his arrest, several calls for his immediate and unconditional release were made by the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), AIT chapter and the management of AIT and this morning, Amaechi was granted bail.
